This river, which merges with the Hangaroa to form the Wairoa River at the scenic Te Reinga Falls, is famous for a strain of muscular, spectacular swimmers known as the Ruakituri Rainbows. Their genes have been used in many experimental stockings in other New Zealand fishing waters. The Ruakituri River is a trout-rich environment and is one of the top fly fishing rivers in New Zealand. These Rainbow and Brown can be caught on dry fly or nymphing. Fly fishing only, open 1 Oct to 30 June. |

The Motu is the only New Zealand river protected as a wilderness area by act of parliament. The upper reaches run through lush farmland before entering dense virgin native forest to complete the 100km jorney to the Pacific Ocean. The wild Motu Brown Trout test the skill of any angler entering their domain. Requires some expertise and experience of the angler. Fly fishing only, open 1 Oct to 30 June. |
